Meet James Recinos
I’m a huge football fan, but really I’ll watch almost anything when there’s something on the line. Playoffs, rivalry games, close finishes. I love competition.
That probably explains part of why I became a physical therapist. I’ve always enjoyed working out and staying active, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized being in shape means a lot more to me than what I can lift in the gym.
I want my body to let me do the things I actually enjoy doing.
Travel. Work on my house. Play sports. Spend time with friends and family. Explore a new city without worrying about how much walking is involved. And hopefully keep doing all of those things for a very long time.
That’s also how I look at physical therapy.
I don’t think the end goal should just be “your pain is a little better.” I want to understand what you’re trying to get back to and build your rehab around your life, not hand you the same sheet of exercises everyone else gets.
That’s one of the reasons I started Vital Performance Physical Therapy. Working in traditional insurance based clinics showed me how easy it is for people to feel like a number when a therapist is trying to manage multiple patients at once. I wanted to create something more personal, where I actually have the time to listen, figure out what’s going on, and build a plan around the person in front of me.
Outside of physical therapy, I’m ridiculously curious. I love traveling and learning about different cultures, history, food, and why people do things differently around the world. I’m also a finance nerd, a homeowner who always seems to have another project to work on, and I can lose an embarrassing amount of time talking about a really good movie or series.
Most weekends, though, you’ll probably find me with the same small group of friends I’ve had for years.
And I think a lot of that carries over into how I treat people.
I like hearing people's stories. I want to know why getting better actually matters to you, because your shoulder isn't just a shoulder if it's keeping you from lifting, playing with your kids, working, traveling, or doing something you love.
Your rehab should help you get back to your life, not just get you through physical therapy.
